A few days later, Rachel found another letter from her mother waiting when she arrived home from work. She went out to the back verandah to read it. Naomi had already opened it, saying she couldn’t wait.

Dear Naomi and Rachel,

How are you both getting along? We’ll definitely come home at Christmas for a few weeks to avoid the busiest time of year here. Most locals do a house swap at Christmas and visit relatives on the mainland. Reg is happy to take the service for the tourists.

The corner of Rachel’s mouth twitched. Already her mother sounded like an island local.

We’re having a great time on Lord Howe. The church has taken us into their hearts. These folk have shown me what a church should be. All those years at Victory, I never knew what I was missing. Maybe Victory got too big, but it never reminded me of a family, not even in the early days. I always felt like an outsider.
